Itraconazole is a broad-spectrum, synthetic triazole antimycotic that is effective against zygomycetes and eumycetes (like Aspergillus spp.), many types of dimorphic fungi, yeast (Malassezia spp. and Candida spp.), and dermatophytes (Microsporum spp. and Trichophyton spp.). Itraconazole works by binding to the cytochrome p-450 isoenzymes of fungi. This process inhibits ergosterol synthesis, affecting the function of membrane-bound enzymes and permeability of membranes. The effect is irreversible, resulting in degeneration of structures.
