DL-methionine is a urine-acidifying amino acid. It may also help in the treatment of some types of bladder stones.

Use caution in overdosing animals to avoid chronic over-acidification as this could cause problems such as:
- Precipitation of non-struvite minerals in the urine
- Heinz body formation
- Osteoporosis
- Potassium wasting
- Acidosis
